The dialogue was the second such meeting of the Ambassador with the community since she arrived in Thailand in June 2010. It was held in line with efforts by the Embassy to involve the community in projects that are ultimately designed to benefit them and Philippine national interests, in general.
Some of the projects presented by the Ambassador are as follows:
- READ PHILIPPINES – A project designed to raise awareness of Philippine culture, customs and traditions by helping Thai universities and colleges build and/or expand their respective libraries’ Filipiniana collections through donations of Philippine books, magazines and other reading materials. The project will begin with a “book shower” whereby members of the community will be asked to donate at least 1 Filipiniana book each. The books collected will then be turned over to selected Thai schools.
- PAMPANGA PAROLS- A project to adorn the Embassy grounds with Pampanga parol during the Holidays. The Ambassador asked the members of the Filcom to contribute at least 1 parol each.
- PAARALAN SA EMBAHADA- To be held during school break next year, the project will ask Filipino teachers in Thailand to volunteer to conduct classes at the Philippine Embassy on Filipino culture, arts, music, etc., for children or grandchildren of first or second-generation Filipinos in Thailand.
- CULTURAL PROJECTS, including exhibitions featuring Filipino artists in various fields; lecture series on Philippine cultural connectivity with its ASEAN neighbors; and art fairs featuring the works of noted Filipino painters.
Aside from presenting the Embassy’s projects, the Ambassador also urged the members of the community to share their experiences as OFWs in Thailand. The ensuing discussion revealed that some OFWs, especially those working as teachers, have work-related problems including delayed payment of salaries, very low salary compared to other teachers of different nationalities. The Ambassador assured the community that the Embassy will look into these problems and see how they can be addressed.
