Filipino students won top prize in environental quiz in Bangkok Filipino students Lawrence Medina and Paulo Manzanilla bested representatives from 14 other countries and garnered the first prize at an environmental quiz organized by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in Bangkok on 20-21 August 2007. Lawrence and Paulo, fourth-year students at Philippine Science High School, received US$1,500 prize money as a grant to initiate an environmental project in school. Their feat also entitled them to attend celebrations of the 20th anniversary of the Montreal Protocol in Canada next month. The duo committed to disseminate the information they gained to their school and society to raise greater awareness about environmental problems, particularly air pollution in Metro Manila. A team from Sri Lanka won the second prize, while student from Thailand and Malaysia took the third and fourth places, respectively. The Regional Ozone Quiz Competition was organized by UNEP in cooperation with Bangkok's Ruamrudee International School with the aim of making students obtain more knowledge about environmental problems in this region and around the world. The competition focused on scientific and historical knowledge of the Montreal Protocol.
