IN FOCUS Filipinos Greet His Majesty the King on the Occasion of His Majesty's 79th Birthday Anniversary

On behalf of the people and government of the Philippines, H.E. President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo conveyed her felicitations to His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej of Thailand on the occasion of His Majesty’s 79th birth anniversary on 5 December 2006.

In her message, the President noted that Thailand and its people "continue to enjoy the fruits of peace and prosperity" under His Majesty's "visionary leadership and benevolent rule."

In June 2006, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo also conveyed her felicitations to His Majesty the King on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of His Majesty’s accession to the throne on 9 June 2006.

The Philippine Embassy in Bangkok recently coursed through the Thai Foreign Ministry a present for the King on this auspicious occasion. The present was an art piece (pastel on paper) created by world-renowned Filipino artist Rene Robles entitled, 'Fatherland.' It depicted the King as a loving father and wise leader who has inspired his kingdom through the years, particularly during times of crisis.

'The artwork is a celebration of the King’s inspired leadership, one that has helped move forward the Thai nation as well as its broad and deep partnership with the Philippines,' said Ambassador Rodriguez.

'Fatherland' was actually the centerpiece of a one-man exhibition by Robles at the Thai National Gallery last April. The exhibition, entitled 'The Art of Making Visible: How I Love Thailand,' was organized by the Philippine Embassy in Bangkok and the Thai Culture Ministry to commemorate this year’s royal celebrations as well as the 108th anniversary of Philippine independence.

Seven Filipinos were granted royal pardon in line with the celebrations of the 60th anniversary of the His Majesty's accession to the throne.

In May 2002, the King granted an hour-long audience to President Arroyo who was in Thailand for an official visit. Although they mostly discussed bilateral issues, the two leaders also had fond recollections of the the King’s royal visit to the Philippines over 40 years ago. Then President Diosdado Macapagal honored the King and Queen Sirikit with a state banquet at Malacanang, where a young Gloria Macapagal was among the featured folk dancers.
