THE PHILIPPINES THE PHILIPPINES' WORLD HERITAGE SITES

The Philippines has five of the world’s UNESCO declared World Heritage Sites (WHS). These sites – classified under the Convention concerning the Protection of the World Cultural and Natural Heritage adopted by UNESCO in 1972 as having “outstanding universal value,” are the Tubbataha Reef National Marine Park, Baroque Churches of the Philippines, the Rice Terraces of the Philippine Cordilleras, the Historic Town of Vigan in Ilocos Sur, and the Subterranean River National Park in Palawan.
  • Tubbataha Reef Marine Park - A reef ecosystem made up of two atolls located in the Central Sulu Sea, 181 km. southeast of Puerto Princesa City, in the municipality of Cagayancillo, Palawan. The park covers 33,200 hectares, including the north and south reefs. It is a unique example of an atoll reef with a very high density of marine species. The north islet serves as a nesting place for birds and marine turtles. The site is an excellent example of a pristine coral reef with a spectacular 100-meter perpendicular wall, extensive lagoons and two coral islands. It was proclaimed as a National Marine Park on August 11, 1988 and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage in 1993, in recognition of its outstanding universal value in terms of marine life species diversity and richness. Tubbataha offers some of the best diving you are ever likely to come across in the world. Many dive operators currently offer trips to the reefs.
  • Baroque Churches of the Philippines - These churches, comprised of San Agustin (Manila), La Asuncion (Santa Maria), San Agustin (Paoay), Santo Tomas (Miag-ao), represent a synthesis of European church design (baroque) and Filipino construction techniques and decorations. Their specific characteristics include a separate bell-tower and strong buttresses designed to withstand earthquakes common in the region.
  • Rice Terraces of the Philippines - The Rice Terraces of the Cordilleras (on the island of Luzon) are a cultural landscape developed 2000 years ago by the Philippines’ Ifugao tribe. These rice terraces differ from those found in other places in Asia because of their imposing altitude (up to 1500 meters) and steep slopes (maximum of 70 degrees). A complex system of dams, channels and bamboo pipes keeps whole groups of terraces adequately flooded. These imposing structures are still in use.
  • Historic Town of Vigan- The Town of Vigan is situated in northeastern Luzon. It was established as a trading town by the Spanish in 1572. It is considered the best-preserved example of a planned Spanish colonial town in Asia. Its architecture reflects the coming together of cultural elements from elsewhere in the Philippines, from China and from Europe, resulting in a culture and townscape that have no parallel anywhere in East and Southeast Asia. The town differs from Spanish colonial towns found in Latin America because its Latin tradition is tempered by strong Chinese and Filipino influences.
  • Palawan's Subterranean River- This park features a spectacular limestone karsts landscape with an underground river. One of the river's distinguishing features is that it emerges directly into the sea, and its lower portion is subject to tidal influences. The area also represents a significant habitat for biodiversity conservation. The site contains a full 'mountain-to-sea' ecosystem and has some of the most important forests in Asia.

The Philippines’ WHS provide a fascinating narrative of the country and the history of the Filipino people. They confirm the abundance of nature in the country and illustrate how Filipinos through prehistoric and colonial times define and developed their own societies and artistic styles.

The Philippines' wealth in cultural and natural heritage sites is also manifested by the considerable number of other significantly important places of interest which have been on UNESCO’s tentative list, as follows:
