FILIPINO COMMUNITY IN THAILAND CELEBRATE 111TH PHILIPPINE INDEPENDENCE ANNIVERSARY

The Philippine Embassy in Bangkok had undertaken the following activities to commemorate the 111th anniversary of the proclamation of Philippine Independence.

Flag Raising Ceremony at the Embassy Grounds, 12 June 2009

A flag raising ceremony was held at the Philippine Embassy grounds on 12 June 2009 at 0900H. Ambassador Antonio V. Rodriguez, accompanied by Madame Janette A. Condolence book for former President Aquino:Members of the Diplomatic Corps and prominent Thai personages, such as former Premier Anand Panyarachun, members of His Majesty the King's Privy Council, and Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya (shown in the photo), signed the Book of Condolence which the Philippine Embassy opened in honor of the late former President Corazon C. Aquino. The Embassy also opened a Book of Condolence for use by the Filipino community in Thailand at the Holy Redeemer Church in Bangkok.

Ambassador Rodriguez talks to Thai media: Ambassador Rodriguez (right) stresses a point during the 8 July 2009 taping of Morning Talk featuring the Philippines. During the interview, the Ambassador took the opportunity to highlight developments in RP-Thai relations, the state of the Philippine economy, and the latest on the Filipino community in Thailand. Morning Talk is a Thai English-language weekday talk-show which also airs to over 170 countries worldwide. Giving interviews have been a regular part of the Embassy's efforts at advancing friendship and understanding between Filipinos and Thais.

In compliance with the guidelines and authority issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs, the Philippine Embassy started implementing the issuance of the Machine Readable Passport (MRP) in August 2008.

The Embassy has been instructed by Secretary of Foreign Affairs Alberto G. Romulo to accelerate the transition from the manually scripted passport (green) to MRP (maroon) in order for Filipinos to be at par with the standard set for international travelers.
